The new year has begun with heartbreak for the West End community. An 11-year-old girl was fatally shot at a neighborhood playground on the evening of January 1.
The Cincinnati Police Department (CPD) is currently investigating the incident, which occurred just hours after the city rang in 2026.
According to initial police reports, officers responded to shots fired at a playground in the West End. This location now serves as a grim reminder of the city’s ongoing struggle with youth violence.
Fox19 reported that authorities identified the victim as Queener’Re Reed, who succumbed to her injuries at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital on Thursday.
The incident occurred at approximately 6:45 p.m. near Laurel Playground on West Liberty and John streets.
Authorities have not yet released the name of the victim or identified a suspect. A heavy police presence remained in the area throughout Thursday night and Friday morning. Homicide detectives canvassed for witnesses and reviewed security footage.
A community under siege
This fatal shooting marks the second incident of gun violence involving children in the West End in less than a week. It sparked outrage and fear among residents.
On Christmas morning, December 25, a mother and her two children were injured in a shooting while driving through the same neighborhood. Cincinnati police reported that the suspect fired the family upon in their vehicle. This sent all three to the hospital.
While a suspect was arrested in connection with the Christmas Day shooting, the close proximity of these two events has left the community on edge. They fear a potential escalation in local turf conflicts or retaliatory violence.
Echoes of past trauma
For long-time residents of the West End, the death of an 11-year-old girl strikes a painful chord. The neighborhood is still grappling with the trauma of the November 2023 murder of Domonic Davis. A drive-by shooting near Laurel Playground killed another 11-year-old.
Community leaders will gather this weekend to demand answers and increased safety measures for the city’s youth. The repetition of such violence—claiming the lives of children in spaces designated for play—has renewed calls for systemic intervention in Cincinnati’s historic neighborhoods.
Call for information
The Cincinnati Police Department is urging anyone with information regarding the New Year’s Day shooting to come forward. Tips can be directed to the Homicide Unit or submitted anonymously through Crime Stoppers at 513-352-3040.
