The Cincinnati Police Department (CPD) confirm a man is in custody connected to the West End shooting that injured a mother and two children.
The West End shooting occurred early Christmas morning, leaving the community shaken but thankful the victims are stable.
Cincinnati police have arrested a man in connection with the gun violence that marred the holiday yesterday. According to the CPD, the suspect was taken into custody late Thursday, hours after the incident on Central Avenue.
The shooting took place around 2:58 a.m. on Christmas morning. Reported by WLWT, officers were alerted to the scene by a ShotSpotter activation rather than 911 calls. Upon arrival, they discovered a tragic scene involving a 36-year-old mother and her two children, ages 10 and 15, who had been shot while inside their vehicle.
Victims recovering after West End shooting
All three victims were transported to local hospitals immediately after first responders arrived. The mother was taken to UC Medical Center, while the two children were transported to Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center. Fortunately, medical staff have listed all three in stable condition with non-life-threatening injuries.
One of the children, a daughter, reportedly sustained a gunshot wound to the leg. The vehicle they were in was towed from the scene as part of the initial investigation. Police had initially issued a lookout for a silver Chevy Impala seen in the area, though it remains unclear if the arrested suspect was the driver of that specific car.
Investigation details
Detectives worked through the holiday to identify the shooter. Evidence collected at the scene on Central Avenue played a crucial role in tracking down the suspect. As of writing, the motive remains under investigation.
According to WLWT, Cincinnati police announced the arrest of 58-year-old James Brown on Thursday afternoon, charging him with three counts of felonious assault. During his Friday morning arraignment, a judge set his bond at $900,000.
While Brown’s attorney acknowledged that his client fired shots at the vehicle, he argued that Brown acted in self-defense. Brown is scheduled to return to court on January 5.
Meanwhile, the police have impounded the vehicle to conduct a further examination.
