A tragic Christmas morning shooting in the West End in Cincinnati has left a mother and her two young children hospitalized with serious injuries, according to a report by WCPO.
According to police reports, a mother and her children, ages 10 and 15, were wounded about 3 a.m. A driver in another vehicle opened fire on them as they traveled along Central Avenue near Kindel Street in the West End.
Details of the incident
According to the Cincinnati Police Department, officers responded to reports of shots fired. They discovered a vehicle that had been struck multiple times. Inside the car, they found a female driver and two juvenile passengers suffering from gunshot wounds.
Emergency responders arrived quickly at the scene to treat the victims. The mother and both children were transported to the University of Cincinnati Medical Center. The children were taken to Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center, respectively.
According to authorities, one child sustained a leg injury. However, the specific wound locations for the other two victims remain unconfirmed. Nonetheless, they confirmed that the victims are expected to survive.
The investigation is currently being led by District 1, while CPD Lt. Jerome Herring has identified the suspect’s vehicle as a silver Chevy Impala sedan, FOX19 reported.
As of writing, law enforcement officials have not identified a suspect or a motive for the attack.
Holiday gun violence trends in Cincinnati
Determining whether shooting incidents occur often in Cincinnati during Christmas requires recent data analysis and historical trends.
While the city has experienced incidents of holiday violence, broader statistical analyses from late 2024 and 2025 show some trends. These analyses indicate that shootings overall are on a downward trajectory.
According to recent CPD statistics, violent crime saw a 4-percent increase in 2024. This increase covered offenses like assault and burglary, WVXU reported.
While the city recorded 73 homicides, one more than the previous year, Senior Crime Analyst Jillian Desmond noted a complex shift in the data: gun violence is actually declining, but other types of aggravated assaults are rising.
Despite the year-over-year uptick, violent crime remains 10-percent lower than 2019 levels. A significant area of concern is firearm theft. Data shows that 61 percent of stolen guns were taken from vehicles.
However, the Christmas season has not been without specific tragedies. For instance, CGTN reported in 2023 on violence during the Christmas weekend. This included a bar shooting in Cincinnati where two people were injured.
Historically, local law enforcement has recognized the potential for increased holiday crime. WKRC reported in 2019 on the formation of a “Holiday Violence Task Force.” This task force was designed to combat seasonal upticks in robberies and violent crime.
This proactive policing suggests that while shootings may not be the sole focus, authorities are historically aware that the festive season can bring unique public safety challenges.
