Shootings leave 2 wounded near University of Cincinnati campus

Cincinnati police are investigating two shootings near the University of Cincinnati after both incidents wounded one person each. 

Police said both victims are expected to survive, while investigators have not announced any arrests or suspects. 

The shootings happened within two days as students returned for the University of Cincinnati’s fall semester. The second incident happened just hours before classes began Monday. Police have not confirmed that either shooting involved UC students. 

UC-area shootings happened near campus on consecutive mornings

The first UC-area shooting happened shortly after 3 a.m. Sunday near Moerlein Avenue and Lyon Street. Cincinnati police said one person suffered a gunshot wound to the arm. The victim went to a hospital for treatment, and police said the injury was not life-threatening.

The second shooting happened early Monday morning near the UC campus. Police responded to reports of shots fired near Calhoun Street and South Market Street. Officers blocked portions of Jefferson Avenue and Calhoun Street while they investigated the reported gunfire. 

Police also learned that a person had arrived at a local hospital with a gunshot wound around the same time. The victim told investigators he had been near the Stop-N-Go on McMillan Street when he was shot. Police said he is expected to survive.

Investigators have not established whether the Monday reports involved the same incident. Police have also not said whether the Sunday and Monday shootings share any connection. 

Shootings remain under investigation

Cincinnati police have not released suspect information in either case. No arrests had been announced when WCPO reported the incidents Monday. Investigators also have not identified a possible motive for either shooting.

The lack of confirmed connections remains an important part of the investigation. Police have not said that the shootings represent a coordinated series of incidents. They also have not confirmed that any UC students, faculty members or employees were victims.

According to WCPO, police were still investigating both cases after the Monday shooting. The news outlet reported that both victims were expected to survive. ⁠

The incidents occurred in areas surrounding the university rather than as confirmed shootings inside a UC building. That distinction matters because police have not reported an active threat on the university campus connected to these shootings.

The University of Cincinnati maintains emergency procedures for armed individuals and violent crimes. Its emergency guidance tells people to run when they can safely escape, hide when they cannot escape and call 911 once they reach safety. 

UC-area shootings occurred as students returned

The timing of the Monday shooting added concern because it occurred only hours before the fall semester began. UC students were returning to campus and surrounding neighborhoods as police investigated the overnight incident. 

The affected streets sit in the broader area surrounding UC’s Uptown campus. Calhoun Street, McMillan Street and other nearby roads serve students and residents in the Clifton Heights area.

The incidents did not result in reported life-threatening injuries. Police said the Sunday victim suffered a gunshot wound to the arm, while the Monday victim was also expected to survive. 

Still, the two incidents occurred within roughly 24 hours. Police are now working to determine what happened in each case and whether the incidents have any connection.

The university has previously issued safety alerts for incidents involving gunfire near or on campus. UC’s public safety materials direct students and employees to contact police during emergencies and provide specific instructions for violent situations.

What police have confirmed about the shootings

What happens next in the investigation

Cincinnati police are expected to continue reviewing evidence from both scenes and information provided by witnesses. Investigators have not disclosed whether surveillance footage, shell casings or other evidence has produced leads.

Police also have not said whether the reported gunfire near Calhoun and South Market streets resulted in the same person later treated at a hospital. That question remains unresolved based on the information released publicly.

The investigation could change as detectives gather additional evidence. Any new suspect information or arrests would provide more clarity about what happened during the two early-morning incidents.

The shootings also come as Cincinnati continues to monitor gun violence across neighborhoods. The city has reported changes in shooting totals in recent years, making individual incidents part of a broader public-safety discussion.

For now, police have confirmed two wounded victims, two separate early-morning investigations and no arrests. Authorities have not reported any fatality in either incident.
