As families across the Queen City prepare to gather for Turkey Day, the weather forecast suggests it’s time to trade the umbrellas for heavy coats.
Following a wet and blustery start to the holiday week, Cincinnati is bracing for a stark drop in temperatures. This is setting the stage for a classic, albeit chilly, Thanksgiving Day.
According to the National Weather Service (NWS) in Wilmington, a vigorous cold front swept through the Ohio Valley on Wednesday. It effectively pushed out the rain but ushered in a significant mass of cold air. For Thanksgiving Day, Thursday, November 27, 2025, residents can expect mostly sunny to partly cloudy skies. These conditions offer a bright but biting backdrop for holiday festivities.
A cold “Turkey Trot” morning
Runners participating in the annual Thanksgiving Day Race downtown will face a frosty start. Forecasters predict morning lows dipping into the 20s, with wind chills likely making it feel even colder.
The NWS advises anyone heading out for morning parades or football games to bundle up in layers. The high temperature for the day is expected to struggle to reach the mid-30s (roughly 34°F to 38°F). This is a sharp contrast to the mild 50s and 60s experienced earlier in the week.
Meanwhile, Jeff Oechslein, chief meteorologist at WTOV9 updated on X the weather around 6 a.m. today.
Good morning! A strong cold front just passed through Cincinnati at 6 am and it’s chugging our way. A passing shower will accompany the front, winds will pick up and temperatures will take a tumble this afternoon. pic.twitter.com/BdfsQfJofk

Travel and road conditions
The good news for travelers is that the precipitation has largely moved out of the region. AccuWeather reports that Thanksgiving Day itself will be dry. This creates a safe window for local travel. It comes as a relief after Tuesday and Wednesday saw heavy rain and gusty winds that complicated commutes on I-75 and I-71.
However, the Ohio Department of Transportation (ODOT) and AAA have noted that while the weather has calmed, traffic volume remains high. With a record number of Ohioans projected to travel this year, up nearly 2.1 percent from 2024, drivers should remain cautious. The dry roads on Thursday are a welcome respite. It’s essential before potential winter weather returns later in the weekend.

Weekend outlook: Winter mode engaged
The cold snap is not a one-day affair. The region is settling into “winter mode” for the remainder of the holiday weekend.
Forecasts indicate that while Black Friday will remain chilly and dry, a new system could approach by Saturday or Sunday. This could potentially bring a wintry mix of rain and snow showers to the Greater Cincinnati area.
“There will not be any appreciable precipitation to speak of [on Thanksgiving],” an NWS spokesperson stated, noting that the primary story will be the blustery winds and temperature plunge. Residents are encouraged to secure any loose outdoor holiday decorations, as gusty winds may persist through Thursday afternoon.
For those hosting dinner, the weather is perfect for keeping the oven on and staying indoors.
But for the brave souls venturing out to watch the Bengals game or head to family gatherings, the message from meteorologists is clear: Winter has arrived in Cincinnati just in time for the turkey.
