Cincinnati high school football is stepping onto an NFL-sized stage tonight—and the hype keeps building for Elder vs St. Xavier
The undefeated Elder Panthers (12-0) and the surging St. Xavier Bombers (9-2) meet at Paycor Stadium for the OHSAA Division I Region 4 Championship, with a state semifinal berth on the line. Thanks to overwhelming demand, this regional final has already outgrown every high school venue in the region—and it shows.
Ticket Sales Surge Past 19,000
WCPO now reports that ticket sales for the much-anticipated Elder vs. St. Xavier game have climbed over 19,000, and could push toward record-setting territory for a high school football game in Cincinnati. For context, Paycor Stadium hasn’t hosted a high school contest since 2018, and never one with this level of pre-sale volume.
Fans poured into downtown hours early, with some calling it the
“biggest high school night the city has seen in years.”
One Elder senior summed it up walking into the stadium:
“This feels like we’re playing on Sundays. You don’t get moments like this twice.”
From Mason to Paycor: A Game Too Big to Contain
The matchup was originally set for Mason High School’s stadium, but seats vanished in under an hour. After families pushed for a larger venue, Hamilton County Commissioners and the Cincinnati Bengals stepped in, offering Paycor as a solution.
Though the move cost Mason a key fundraising opportunity, it allowed tens of thousands of additional fans—including alumni traveling in from out of state—to attend.
NFL Energy Everywhere for Elder vs St. Xavier
Both Elder and St. X bring impressive football legacies—26 combined NFL alumni between the schools. From longtime pros to recent draft picks, the GCL South pipeline is known across the country. That history adds weight to tonight’s stage. The players won’t just be stepping on an NFL field—they’re following in the footsteps of their own alumni.
One St. Xavier parent put it simply:
“These boys grew up watching Bengals games here. Tonight they get to live out the dream.”
Clear skies and mid-50s temperatures set up perfect football conditions.
Elder: Perfect Season, High-Flying Offense
Elder enters undefeated for the first time in its history, fueled by explosive playmaking and a relentless passing attack.

Key Elder players:
-
QB Kaden Estep (Jr.) – 3,048 total yards, 22 TDs
-
RB Tommy Becker (Sr.) – Reliable, physical ground threat
-
WR Jackson Ruth (Sr.) – GCL South’s top receiver
Elder won the regular-season showdown over St. X in late September—one of the most-watched games of the year.
St. Xavier: Defense Steeped in Division I Talent
The Bombers’ calling card is their defense, featuring one of Ohio’s most star-studded units:
-
DE Kobe Clapper — Notre Dame commit
-
LB Aden Reeder — Michigan commit
-
LB Daniel Vollmer — Vanderbilt commit
-
DB Brayden Reilly — Clemson commit
St. X hasn’t allowed more than 14 points in any of their wins—and they’ve won five straight heading into tonight.
Head coach Steve Specht said earlier this week that the Bombers pride themselves on composure:
“If you can block out the noise, you can beat anybody.”
A Rivalry That Defines Cincinnati Football
Elder has won three of the last four, but playoff meetings between these two programs are famously unpredictable. Alumni from both schools still talk about iconic matchups from years past—Nippert finishes, last-second scores, and weather-soaked classics.
Tonight’s setting adds a new chapter. The energy of thousands of students, families, alumni, and Bengals fans transforms this from a playoff game into a citywide event.
