Cincinnati Airbnb shooting leaves 1 injured after about 50 shots fired

A person was injured after Cincinnati police responded to a shooting at a large Airbnb party in Clifton early Wednesday, according to police. 

Officers said about 50 shots were fired during the incident, which unfolded around 12:30 a.m. near Vine Street and West Nixon Street. 

The investigation remains active, and detectives have not announced any suspects or a motive. Local 12 first reported details from the scene, while other local television outlets also confirmed the shooting and ongoing investigation.  

Police said the city’s ShotSpotter gunfire detection system alerted officers to dozens of gunshots. Responding officers found numerous shell casings outside the short-term rental property, where a large party had been underway. Investigators secured the scene and dispersed partygoers so they could collect evidence and interview witnesses.  

Cincinnati Airbnb shooting remains under investigation

The person injured in the shooting suffered a gunshot wound to the shoulder and drove to the University of Cincinnati Medical Center for treatment. Police said the victim is expected to recover, according to a report by FOX19. Authorities have not released the victim’s identity.

Investigators believe the gunfire involved more than one shooter. According to Cincinnati police, most of the shots appeared to come from the front porch of the Airbnb, while someone inside the home returned fire. Detectives continue to examine shell casings, witness statements, and other evidence to determine exactly how the exchange unfolded.  

Police also arrested one person on a concealed weapon violation. However, investigators said that individual is not considered a suspect in the shooting itself. No charges connected to the gunfire have been announced.

As of Wednesday afternoon, Cincinnati police have confirmed:

Airbnb parties continue drawing law enforcement attention

Large gatherings at short-term rental properties have drawn increased scrutiny nationwide after several high-profile shootings in recent years. Airbnb has maintained policies prohibiting disruptive parties and unauthorized events at its rental properties. The company has also implemented screening measures intended to reduce bookings associated with large parties.

The Clifton shooting follows other recent incidents involving large gatherings in the Cincinnati region. Earlier this year, gunfire broke out at a rental property during a post-prom gathering in Butler County, prompting renewed discussion about safety at short-term rentals, according to WLWT.  

Authorities have not indicated whether the Clifton Airbnb violated Airbnb’s party policies or whether the property owner was aware of the gathering.

Investigation continues as detectives seek witnesses

The Cincinnati Police Department is asking anyone with information about the shooting to contact investigators. Detectives continue to review evidence collected from the scene, including shell casings and witness accounts.

Because the investigation remains in its early stages, police have not released descriptions of any suspected shooters. Officials also have not confirmed what led to the exchange of gunfire.
